What is Acne?
It occurs when sebum and dead cells plug hair follicles.
On this platform, we will particularly focus on Hormonal Acne.
What is Hormonal Acne?
It is when breakouts form in adulthood that could range from blackheads and whiteheads to painful cysts(pimples that don’t surface). This is tied to fluctuation in your hormones. It usually forms around the jawline, the bottom of your face, and cheeks.
Triggers are; menstruation, increased androgen levels, PCOS, and menopause. They aggravate the skin by increasing skin inflammation, clogged skin, acne-causing bacteria and oil production.
Treatment
Over-the-counter products don’t do much unless the acne is mild. If not it is advisable to consult a dermatologist.
Some of the ingredients to look for in products you can add to your skincare routine( assuming you have the basics) are:
- Retinoids
- Benzoyl Peroxide
- Salicylic Acid( milder cases)
- Hydrating ingredients( reduce inflammation)
